Reusable mugs and packaging in Sweden
Rondo is a Swedish-based reusable system customised for grocery store and convenience store settings, where a conventional deposit is used as incentive for each participating store and consumer to use and return each bowl and cup efficiently.
Reusable take away packaging is delivered to or returned from stores based on the stores’ own orders in the Rondo platform, and each container is washed and packed at an industrial washing site before/between use. Being modelled to be used at scale, all reusables in the Rondo system are serialized by RFID and tracked as it is arriving or leaving the washing facility.
REUSE – reusable packaging
- What it is: An RFID-powered deposit-based reuse system with washing included in the pay-per-use service.
- How it works: Every store places orders of weekly deliveries and returns in the Rondo web order platform. They are charged a deposit, a freight cost and a service fee for every standard tray of reusables they order. When stores charge the consumer at the point of sale, the consumer only pay a deposit which is credited upon return at the store. No app or digital interface is required from the store or consumer to use Rondo.
- Purpose: A positive impact on sustainability and waste-reduction by providing a reusable system that is scalable for transaction-intensive contexts, e.g. a supermarket.
Target group for this tool:
Grocery stores, supermarkets, convenience stores and events. So far, the vast majority of Rondo stores belong to Hemköp.
